First Time on a Scooter in a Foreign City: What to Know Before You Start

Renting a scooter in a country where you don’t speak the language, don’t know the traffic patterns, and have never ridden one before sounds simple in the app.

First Time on a Scooter Abroad

It is simple. But “simple” and “no preparation needed” are not the same thing.

Here’s what actually matters before your first ride in Antalya.

Before you even touch the scooter

You need a valid driving license recognized in Turkey. For a standard 50cc scooter, a regular category B car license is enough — you don’t need a motorcycle license. No license means no rental. This isn’t bureaucracy for its own sake: the app checks your documents and won’t let a ride start until they’re verified.

Wearing a helmet is mandatory under Turkish traffic law for both rider and passenger. Every scooter comes with two, stored in the top box. Put yours on before you unlock anything, not after you’ve already started moving.

Common mistakes first-time riders make

Riding without adjusting to local traffic first. Traffic in Antalya moves differently than what you’re used to at home — drivers cut in closer, buses stop suddenly, and scooters share lanes with cars. Spend your first five minutes riding slowly in a quiet side street before merging into the main flow.

Underestimating wet or uneven surfaces. Cobblestones in the old town, pebble access roads near the beaches, sudden rain on asphalt — all of these reduce grip fast. Slow down before you hit them, not while you’re on them.

Following too closely. New riders often ride the way they’d drive a car — close behind the vehicle in front. On a scooter, you need more distance and more reaction time, especially near hotel entrances and beach turnoffs where cars stop without warning.

Ignoring the service zone. The app shows the area where scooters are allowed to operate. Riding outside it doesn’t stop your fare — it keeps running, and in some cases the company can remotely disable the scooter and charge for retrieval.

Parking wherever is convenient. Blocking a sidewalk or an entrance isn’t just rude, it’s illegal — and it can get the scooter towed or fined. Use the parking zones highlighted in the app.

Assuming you know the route. Antalya’s old town has narrow one-way streets that don’t always match what the map shows in real time. Check directions before you start moving, not while riding.

What to do if you’re in an accident

This is the part most tourists never think about until it happens. Here’s the actual sequence.

  1. Stop and stay calm. Don’t move the vehicles unless they’re blocking traffic and causing danger.
  2. Call 112 if anyone is injured. Mention that foreigners are involved — English-speaking staff can be dispatched.
  3. Call the police (155 in the city, 156 outside it) if there’s an injury, disagreement about fault, no valid traffic insurance, or serious property
  4. Take photos — the scene, both vehicles, license plates, road signs, and damage from multiple angles, before anything is moved.
  5. Collect the other party’s details — full name, phone number, license plate, and insurance policy number.
  6. If there’s no injury and both sides agree on what happened, Turkey allows you to file the report yourselves through the official Kaza Tutanağı app instead of waiting for police.
  7. Notify Lavanta Ride support immediately through the in-app chat. Don’t try to fix or move the scooter yourself — let the team guide you through the next steps.

Keep your documents and the accident report — you’ll need them if there’s any insurance follow-up.

The short version

Get your license and documents sorted before you rent, wear the helmet without arguing about it, ride slower than feels natural for the first ten minutes, respect the service zone and legal parking, and know the accident sequence before you need it. None of this is complicated. It just has to be done in the right order — ideally before you’re already moving.
