Do You Need a License to Rent a Scooter in Antalya? Categories, Documents, and Common Tourist Mistakes

This is one of the most frequent questions we get before booking, so here’s the full answer — including the parts that usually get glossed over.

Rent a Scooter

The short answer

Yes, you need a valid driving license. There is no scenario where you can legally rent and ride a motor scooter in Turkey without one — and no, an electric scooter exemption doesn’t apply here, because Lavanta Ride scooters are petrol vehicles with real engines, not e-scooters.

For our 50cc scooters, a standard Category B license — the same one you use to drive a regular car — is enough. You do not need a motorcycle license. Any valid license recognized in Türkiye works: Ukrainian, European, international — as long as it’s valid and it’s yours.

How license categories actually work in Turkey

Turkish license categories are tied to engine size and power, not to whether you’re a tourist or a resident.

License classWhat it coversMinimum age
B (car license)Scooters up to 50cc18
A1Motorcycles up to 125cc16
A2Motorcycles up to 35kW18
AMotorcycles above 35kW24 (or 2 years on A2)

This is exactly why our fleet is 50cc. It removes the grey zone entirely: if you can legally drive a car, you can legally ride our scooter.

The nuance worth knowing: for anything above 50cc — the 110cc and 125cc scooters you’ll see offered by some rental shops — the legal picture gets murkier. Some sources say a B license covers mopeds up to 110cc, others point out that 125cc technically requires a motorcycle category. We won’t tell you what another rental company will accept. What we can tell you is what the law says about our scooters: 50cc, Category B, done.

What documents you’ll actually need

The list is short, and everything happens once, during registration:

  • A photo of your passport or ID card
  • A photo of your driver’s license
  • A selfie, so the system can match your face to the license photo

The app verifies your documents before your first ride starts. No verification, no ride — the engine won’t start until the system approves you. This isn’t box-ticking. It’s what keeps your rental legal if you’re ever stopped by traffic police.

The mistakes tourists actually make

Assuming “it’s just a scooter” means no license is needed. It isn’t, and it doesn’t. A 50cc petrol scooter is a motor vehicle under Turkish law, and riding one without a license is treated accordingly.

Uploading someone else’s documents. The selfie check exists specifically for this. If the face doesn’t match the license, verification fails — and attempting it can get your account blocked entirely.

Riding on an expired license. An expired or revoked license fails verification the same way a missing one does. Check the date before you book, not after you’ve landed.

Confusing license validity with residency rules. As a tourist, your valid foreign license is enough — you don’t need a Turkish license or a notarized translation for a short visit. That requirement only kicks in if you become a resident. If you’re staying long-term, sort the paperwork before you ride, not after your first fine.

Thinking the rental company’s flexibility equals legality. Some shops will hand you a 125cc scooter on a car license without asking questions. That tells you about their standards, not about the law. If something goes wrong — an accident, an insurance claim — the license question stops being theoretical very quickly.

One honest caveat

Traffic rules and their enforcement details can change, and edge cases exist — especially around engine sizes above 50cc. What doesn’t change is the core answer for our service: valid Category B license, your own documents, verified in the app. If your situation is unusual — a license from a country with no exchange agreement, a recently renewed document, anything non-standard — ask our support before booking. Real people answer, around the clock.

The bottom line

If you’re 18 or older with a valid car license, you can rent and ride a Lavanta Ride scooter in Antalya legally, today, with no extra exams or paperwork. The mistakes that trip tourists up are almost never about the rules being complicated — they’re about assuming the rules don’t apply. They do. And now you know exactly which ones.
